COTE DE BEAUNE
Caroline Frey – Aloxe Corton
In 2015, acclaimed winemaker Caroline Frey acquired the iconic Château Corton C., a magnificent 19th-century château and historic monument overlooking the Côte de Beaune. Best known for producing benchmark wines at Paul Jaboulet Aîné in the Rhône and Château La Lagune in Bordeaux, Caroline brought her wealth of experience to Burgundy, determined to unlock the full potential of one of the region's most remarkable terroirs.
Today, the estate comprises 7 hectares of organically certified vineyards across 13 appellations, including Corton Grand Cru, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, Meursault, Volnay, Pommard, and several sought-after Premier Cru sites. Among its crown jewels is the monopole Corton Grand Cru Le Clos du Château, an exceptional parcel surrounding the château itself. Caroline deliberately maintains a small production, allowing every climat to be vinified separately and express its unique identity with absolute precision. Since 2021, the entire estate has been certified organic, with regenerative farming practices that promote biodiversity, healthier soils and long-term vineyard resilience.
Custom-made concrete vats of varying sizes allow each individual parcel to be vinified independently, while temperature-controlled fermentations, gravity-fed movements and a thoughtful élevage using French oak (approximately 30% new) alongside Clayver ceramic vessels preserve purity and site expression. Every decision, from vineyard to cellar, is driven by Caroline's philosophy of producing wines that are elegant, transparent and unmistakably Burgundian.
Wine style : The wines are consistently elegant, with finely integrated tannins, restrained oak, excellent balance, and a seamless interplay of juicy red and black fruit aromas. Classic in style, with extra finesse on this beautiful range of terroirs. On top of that, the estate releases the wines only when they are ready to drink—a rare policy today.
Why Vibrant : I tasted the wines at the estate and was struck by the consistency across the range and the evident care devoted to achieving high quality. On top of that, the estate offers ready-to-drink vintages (like 2019) at a very fair price!
