COTE DE BEAUNE
Kei Shiogai (Beaune)
Kei Shiogai represents a Burgundy in constant evolution. Originally from Tokyo, he discovered wine first in Japan, then in New Zealand through various roles in the industry. Driven by a desire to work both in the vineyard and cellar, he moved to Burgundy in 2014, where he lived with a host family in Dijon, learned French, and earned viticultural qualifications before gaining experience at several prestigious estates.

Inspired by iconic figures such as Henri Jayer and Bernard Noblet, he went on to establish his own project, sourcing grapes from outstanding terroirs, notably in Pommard and Gevrey-Chambertin. Closely involved in vineyard work, he focuses on low yields and millerandage to achieve depth and concentration. In the cellar, Kei oversees every step: meticulous sorting, native yeasts, whole-cluster fermentations, and careful extraction. He embraces a certain level of risk to craft wines with distinctive aromatics and texture. Barrel selection is precise, and sulphur use is kept to a strict minimum, only after malolactic fermentation. His wines reflect a personal vision—rooted in classic Burgundy yet strikingly original. With long ageing over two winters, they reveal remarkable intensity, silky textures, refined yet structured tannins, and complex floral and herbal notes. Elegant, expressive Pinots with real depth and character, destined to leave a lasting impression.
Wine style : The reds are very aromatic, whole cluster aromas - floral, ripe strawberry, peony, cola, sweet spices on smooth tannins.
The whites are concentrated and intense, more on a classic Côte de Beaune style.
Why Vibrant : I met Kei and became a close friend even before his first vintage. With no connections in Burgundy, spent a decade working for other estates, patiently defining his style.
He then demonstrated exceptional resolve in creating his own venture, establishing a singular wine identity despite the obstacles of a deeply conservative region. Respect.
